Kohima | October 18, 2025 : Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday called for Naga unity, declaring it as “the only way forward” while addressing the 6th General Convention of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) at the Capital Cultural Hall in Kohima.

Rio described the merger between the NDPP and the Naga People’s Front (NPF) as both historic and emotional, calling it a step towards reconciliation, unity, and collective strength.

“Today we are at a new juncture, a time of emotional significance, as we embark on a new journey. This merger with the NPF is not just a strategic political decision; it is a step to stand for a shared vision—one strong regional party that can better represent the aspirations of our people and address the long-pending Naga political issue more effectively,” Rio said.

Expressing optimism that the merger will strengthen regional representation, Rio stated that if regional parties can unite despite past political contests, others can also follow the same path.

“The message is crystal clear—unity is the only way forward,” he emphasized.

The chief minister urged all members to continue working with renewed dedication as part of a “united family,” assuring that the merger would lead to a stronger and more prosperous Nagaland.

Recalling his political journey that began with the NPF in 1974, Rio referred to the party as the “parent party” and highlighted its historic legacy since its formation on October 21, 1963, under A. Kevichusa.

He also acknowledged the NPF’s pioneering role as the first regional party in the Northeast to ally with the BJP and the second oldest regional party in India.

On the recent closure of the legal case concerning the NDPP’s deregistration, Rio informed that the court had dismissed the case following the death of the appellant, confirming that the party now has no liabilities.

Reflecting on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rio noted that circumstances were “beyond anyone’s control” but remained hopeful for better days ahead if the party continues to work collectively.

“We are writing a new chapter in the political history of Nagaland—a chapter that embodies reconciliation, unity, and collective strength,” he affirmed.
