Centre Hands Over Investigation of Khopanala Explosion Case to NIA

Centre cites gravity of offence and national security implications as NIA takes over Khopanala explosion probe.

KOHIMA, JULY 28, 2026: The Government of India has entrusted the investigation into the Khopanala explosion case in Chümoukedima to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), citing the gravity of the offence and its national security implications.

According to a press release issued by the Nagaland Police on Tuesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs, through a communication dated July 27, 2026, informed the Government of Nagaland that the investigation into the explosion case registered at Chümoukedima Police Station has been entrusted to the NIA.

The case pertains to the incident that occurred at Khopanala, Chümoukedima village, on July 13, 2026.

The Central Government, taking the view that a scheduled offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, has been committed in the case, has directed the NIA to take over the investigation under Section 6(5), read with Section 8 of the NIA Act, 2008.

The decision was taken having regard to the gravity of the offence and its national security implications, the press release stated.

The Nagaland Government and Nagaland Police will coordinate with the NIA for the handover process as required by law.
