CM Rio Meets Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer, First Naga Woman to Serve as Gauhati High Court Judge

Kohima, July 23, 2026: Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio met Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer, who has made history as the first Naga woman to be appointed and sworn in as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court.

In a post on X, Chief Minister Rio described her achievement as a “proud milestone for Nagaland” and an inspiration, particularly for young women. He also wished Justice Longkumer a distinguished tenure in the service of justice.

Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer was sworn in as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on February 17, 2025. According to the Gauhati High Court’s official publication, she holds the distinction of being the first woman from the Naga community to be sworn in as an Additional Judge of the High Court. The Court’s official records also confirm her appointment and assumption of office on February 17, 2025.

Her appointment marked a significant milestone in the judicial history of Nagaland and the Naga community. It also represents an important achievement for women from the state, particularly those aspiring to pursue careers in law and public service.

The Chief Minister’s meeting with Justice Longkumer comes as her historic appointment continues to be recognised as a source of pride for Nagaland. Her journey to the Gauhati High Court is also expected to inspire young people, especially women, to pursue excellence and seek greater representation in the legal and judicial professions.
