Bendangmeren Ozukum, affectionately known as Boss Meren, has long been a towering figure in the Nagamese film industry. But today, his story is not just one of regional fame—it is a symbol of persistence, artistic excellence, and the quiet revolution brewing in Nagaland’s creative scene. Meren’s latest appearance in the Telugu sci-fi blockbuster Kalki 2898 AD has brought new attention to an actor whose roots lie deep in local storytelling and community cinema.
Born in Waromung village under Mokokchung district, Meren’s career began in 1999 with the popular TV series Bosti Manu. His breakout film, Poisa Para Morom He Dangor, established him as a household name across Nagaland. Over the years, he starred in dozens of films including Mr. Jonny, Dunia de Kismat, Load, Dukh, and Hosa Morom, becoming one of the most recognized faces in Nagamese cinema.
A Historic Leap: From Nagaland to Kalki 2898 AD
In a surprising turn of events, Meren found himself cast in a minor role in the high-budget pan-India film Kalki 2898 AD, which stars Bollywood heavyweights like Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan. Initially brought in as a background character, his role was soon elevated to that of a soldier after directors noticed his natural screen presence.
Though the role was brief, it was significant—it marked the first time a Nagamese actor appeared in such a widely promoted national film. “It was a big opportunity and a humbling experience,” Meren said in a recent interview, adding that the moment signaled that talents from Nagaland can find space on bigger platforms if given a chance.
An Advocate for Local Cinema
Meren is not just an actor—he is an outspoken advocate for the Nagamese film industry. In multiple interviews, he has highlighted the challenges facing regional cinema: lack of infrastructure, negligible government support, and a dismissive audience that often compares local films to Bollywood or Hollywood productions.
“Our people say local films are ‘cringe ase’, but how will we grow if our own people don’t support us?” he asked pointedly. He noted that only one functional theater currently exists in Nagaland—in Dimapur—making film screenings, premieres, and even basic promotion extremely difficult.
He also expressed concern over nepotism and favoritism in cultural projects, stating, “Talent often comes second to connections. This must change if we want a serious film culture to thrive.”
Eyes on the Future
Meren’s message to the youth is clear: passion must be backed with preparation. He encourages aspiring actors to pursue formal training in acting schools and to treat film as a serious craft, not just a hobby. A National School of Drama alumnus himself, Meren said, “You’re never too old to chase a dream. But you need to train, commit, and understand the industry from within.”
In 2020, he launched his official YouTube channel to showcase his body of work and offer a digital platform for Nagamese content. This initiative, supported by local organizations, marked another step toward modernizing and digitizing regional cinema.
A Symbol of Possibility
Boss Meren’s journey reflects the quiet strength of a regional star carving his place in a national story. His resilience, honesty, and commitment to uplifting Nagaland’s film industry have made him more than just an actor—he’s become a cultural ambassador.
As Nagaland’s creative economy finds new footing in the digital era, Boss Meren’s story is a powerful reminder: talent knows no boundary, and when one door opens, it opens the way for many others to follow.
Sir, I am also a struggling actor from Nagaland. (Neangbah Konyak). I have acted in almost 28 Nagamese films and produced “DUKH 1 and DUKH 2”.
I grew up with our Boss and has come to face the same challenges as he mentioned.
However, God has a plan for every struggler.
And now I have made my debut in one of the famous Bollywood web series “The family man 3” which will be released in Nov’25.
Besides, I have also acted in new Bollywood film SILAA (Lead: Harshvardhan Rane and Sadia Khadeet), which is one of the high budget movie coming up.
Now, I have just done shooting in tollywood film.
So, after a prolonged struggle, we are now being partly exposed to the mainland Bollywood or tollywood film industry.
We are proud of ourselves and we’ll never stop trying.
