New Delhi: The ongoing protest led by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk entered a new phase on Saturday after he was shifted from Jantar Mantar to VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital as his indefinite hunger strike reached Day 21.
According to reports, Wangchuk was admitted to the hospital following concerns over his health after three weeks of fasting. His transfer came amid continued protests at Jantar Mantar, where supporters have been demanding action over the alleged national examination paper leak issue and greater accountability.
Within hours of Wangchuk’s hospitalisation, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke announced that he had begun an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity with the activist.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dipke wrote:
“I am starting an indefinite hunger strike beginning right now.”
His announcement quickly gained attention online, with many supporters describing it as a continuation of the movement while Wangchuk remains under medical care.
Sonam Wangchuk’s prolonged fast has drawn widespread attention from across the country, with activists, students, public figures and political leaders expressing support and urging the government to engage in dialogue. The protest has also reignited debate over transparency, accountability and reforms in the country’s education system.
Doctors at Safdarjung Hospital are reportedly monitoring Wangchuk’s condition, while supporters continue to gather in solidarity. Organisers have also called for a peaceful “Chalo Sansad” march to Parliament on 20 July, urging citizens to participate peacefully.
With Wangchuk under medical supervision and another activist now continuing the fast, the protest movement appears set to continue, keeping public attention focused on the demands raised by the campaign.
