Date of Conviction: August 1, 2025
Location: Bengaluru, Karnataka
Court: Special Court for Elected Representatives
The Political Rise
Prajwal Revanna, born on August 5, 1990, is the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda. A member of the powerful Gowda family in Karnataka, his political lineage includes his father H.D. Revanna, a senior JD(S) leader, and uncle H.D. Kumaraswamy, former Chief Minister of Karnataka.
Prajwal earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Bangalore Institute of Technology and briefly studied in Australia before entering active politics under the Janata Dal (Secular) banner. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from the family’s stronghold, Hassan, and won comfortably—becoming the youngest MP from Karnataka and the only JD(S) candidate to win a seat that year.
The Scandal Breaks Out
In 2024, during the general election campaign, several explicit videos emerged online, allegedly showing Prajwal sexually assaulting women. The content triggered nationwide outrage. One of the victims, a domestic worker at the Revanna family farmhouse, accused Prajwal of raping her multiple times during the COVID-19 lockdown and recording the assaults.
Following public pressure, the Karnataka government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), and JD(S) promptly suspended him from the party. Instead of cooperating, Prajwal left India using a diplomatic passport and flew to Germany, escalating public anger and diplomatic scrutiny.
Legal Developments
On May 30, 2024, following his return to India, Prajwal was arrested by the SIT. The investigation produced a comprehensive chargesheet including forensic evidence, digital data, victim testimonies, and corroborative witness statements. His multiple bail applications were rejected due to the severity of the charges and concerns over evidence tampering.
On August 1, 2025, Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat of the Special Court for Elected Representatives found Prajwal guilty of rape, sexual harassment, and criminal intimidation under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Prajwal reportedly broke down in court upon hearing the verdict. Sentencing is expected soon.
What It Means for JD(S) and Indian Politics
Prajwal’s conviction is a major blow to the JD(S), once seen as grooming him to carry forward the Gowda legacy. The party now faces a serious credibility crisis, especially as senior leaders remained mostly silent throughout the controversy.
More broadly, the case raises urgent questions about dynastic politics, abuse of power, and the culture of silence surrounding sexual violence within elite circles. It has also brought attention to the bravery of the survivors who came forward despite threats, stigma, and political influence.
Conclusion
The conviction of Prajwal Revanna marks a rare instance of the Indian legal system holding a powerful political figure accountable for sexual violence. While the trauma of the survivors cannot be undone, the case reinforces a critical truth: no one is above the law.
