Dimapur, October 24: The Federal Republic Government of Nagaland (FRGN), Ministry of Information and Publicity, has announced a series of measures, including Sunday closure of business establishments, a total ban on alcohol sales, action against drug peddlers and prostitution, and phased shutdown of businesses operated by non-locals in Naga-inhabited areas.
In a press release dated October 23, the organisation stated that the measures were unanimously adopted in the interest of preserving socio-cultural values, protecting youth and promoting self-reliance in Naga inhabited areas.
Under the first measure, all business establishments across Naga-inhabited areas have been directed to remain closed on Sundays, which the release described as a day of rest and worship. The organisation warned that heavy penalties would be imposed on business persons found violating the order.
The release also announced a total ban on the sale of alcohol in Nagaland, stating that the ban would remain in place and that there would be no reopening or legalisation of alcohol sales. It cited the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989, and expressed solidarity with the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) in upholding the legislation.
On drug-related activities, the organisation stated that zero tolerance would be maintained against drug peddlers and unlawful activities. It further warned that individuals found engaging in drug peddling and other unlawful activities would be dealt with seriously.
The fourth measure concerns the shutdown of shops and business establishments owned and operated by non-locals in Naga-inhabited areas.
According to the release, all such establishments have been directed to close within 30 days from the date of the notice. The implementation will be carried out in phases, with the first phase taking effect after the expiry of the notice period and covering businesses within village, urban station and town council jurisdictions.
The release stated that businesses operated by non-locals in municipal areas would be addressed in the next phase, following notification.
It added that non-local-operated business establishments within municipal areas would be allowed to continue functioning until further notice, stating that the step was necessary to promote local entrepreneurship and economic self-reliance.
The NSCN/FRGN also called upon village authorities and churches to extend their cooperation in the implementation of the measures, stating that the initiatives were intended for the welfare of the public and the well-being of Naga society.
