Dimapur, July 31, 2025: In a strong appeal made in the Lok Sabha, Member of Parliament S. Supongmeren Jamir has urged the Central Government to formulate a dedicated policy to safeguard India’s fragile mountain ecosystems — including the Himalayan regions of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and the entire Northeast.
Raising concerns over the growing impact of environmental degradation, climate change, deforestation, and water scarcity, Jamir stated that India must move beyond solely relying on modern technology. He called for the establishment of a specialized department or a comprehensive policy framework tailored to the unique ecological needs of mountain regions.
He further highlighted the imbalance in the population-based allocation model used by the Finance Commission. “Hilly states with smaller populations often receive inadequate financial support despite their vast ecological significance,” Jamir said. He urged the upcoming 16th Finance Commission to revisit this model to ensure equitable development for India’s mountainous states.
Jamir’s statement marks a significant push for sustainable environmental governance in some of the country’s most ecologically sensitive and strategically important areas.
