Dimapur, July 29 — Dr. Hokishe Yeputhomi, a respected elder statesman and pioneering figure of the Sumi community, passed away today at Eden Hospital, Dimapur, after a prolonged illness. He was 91.Renowned for his unwavering integrity and wisdom, Dr. Yeputhomi played a transformative role in shaping the religious, educational, and social fabric of both the Sumi and wider Naga communities. His legacy spans decades of service marked by principled leadership and selfless dedication.He held numerous key positions during his lifetime, including President of the Sumi Hoho, Chairman of the Sumi Literature Board (SLB), and Principal of Highland Higher Secondary School, Satakha. An educationist at heart, he began his career as a teacher and remained committed to nurturing future generations throughout his life.Born to the late Hetoi Yeputhomi—B.E.M. awardee and chief of Sükhalu village—and the late Zügholi H. Jimomi, Dr. Yeputhomi came from a distinguished lineage of public service. He was married to Vitoli Zhimomi, the youngest sister of two towering Naga leaders—Küghato Sükhai, Ato Kilonser of the FGN, and General Kaito Sükhai, Commander-in-Chief of the Naga National Army.In religious service, Dr. Yeputhomi was the founding Chairman of the United Revival Fellowship (1980–1990), later serving as Executive Secretary of SBAK Nito Mount (1993–2003). He was also a Central Council Member of the Bible Society of India (1994–2000), an Executive Member of the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (2001–2004), and a key figure in the Nagaland Peace Committee under NBCC (1997–2003).His secular contributions were equally impactful. As President of the Sümi Hoho (1997–2001), he played a pivotal role in guiding community affairs and promoting unity. He also served as Convener of the Sümi Migration Research Committee and as Advisor to the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) from 2012 onward.Dr. Hokishe Yeputhomi was among the earliest generation of student leaders from the Sumi community, laying a solid foundation for youth engagement in leadership and social reform. His life was marked by humility, foresight, and an unshakable commitment to the betterment of society.He leaves behind a profound legacy of leadership, service, and inspiration for generations to come.
