In a major development likely to affect municipal services across Dimapur, the DMC Employees Welfare Union (DMCEWU) has officially declared an indefinite strike, beginning August 5, 2025, in protest against long-standing issues related to unpaid salaries, benefits, and lack of proper engagement in duties.

According to a notice issued by the union on August 4, all work under the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) will come to a halt until their demands are met. The strike is being undertaken in response to three unresolved resolutions submitted earlier on July 24, 2025. These include:

  • Clearing backlog salaries of DMC employees
  • Payment of EPF, gratuity, and other employee benefits
  • Proper engagement of employees in their designated duties

The union cited repeated failures by the DMC to address these critical issues, despite multiple assurances. “Until and unless the DMC clears all pending salaries in full, no tools or machinery will be operated across any department or site,” the notice stated.

The protest will be held daily from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM at the Old DMC building, Kalibari Road, Dimapur. The union has stressed that the demonstration will be peaceful, disciplined, and fully compliant with existing laws and regulations. However, a strict attendance policy will be enforced, with fines imposed on staff members who fail to join the agitation.

The strike decision was jointly signed by Lensanaro, General Secretary of DMCEWU, and Vinoto Ayemi, President of the union, indicating full support and participation from the general body.

The disruption in municipal services such as garbage collection, maintenance work, and other public services is expected to cause inconvenience to residents if the issue remains unresolved.

As of now, there has been no official response from the DMC administration. Citizens and civil society organisations have begun calling for immediate dialogue to avoid prolonged disruption of essential services.
