Dimapur, July 30, 2025 — In a major bureaucratic development, Sentiyanger Imchen, a senior IAS officer of the 1995 batch, has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Nagaland, succeeding Dr. J. Alam, who is set to retire on July 31, 2025.
The official notification was issued on Wednesday by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (Personnel ‘A’ Branch). Imchen, who currently serves as Additional Chief Secretary and Finance Commissioner, will formally assume office as the state’s top bureaucrat on August 1, 2025.
A Seasoned Administrator
Sentiyanger Imchen brings with him decades of administrative experience, having held key positions in the Nagaland state government. As Finance Commissioner, he played a crucial role in steering fiscal management and supporting state development initiatives. He has also worked closely with outgoing Chief Secretary Dr. J. Alam on policy reforms, including recent economic and credit empowerment programs.
Imchen’s elevation to the top bureaucratic post is seen as a move to ensure continuity and experienced leadership in Nagaland’s administrative machinery.
The Legacy of Dr. J. Alam
Dr. J. Alam, a 1991 batch IAS officer, has served as Chief Secretary since February 2021. His tenure has been marked by a focus on governance reforms, industrial growth, and public service delivery. Widely respected within government circles, Dr. Alam’s leadership helped stabilize the bureaucracy during a period of political and economic transition in the state.
He also held additional charges including Commissioner & Secretary for Industries, Commerce and Sericulture, contributing significantly to key developmental sectors.
