July 22, 2025: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today visited the landslide-affected portion of National Highway-2 (NH-2) at Phesama to assess the ongoing restoration work. The inspection comes in the wake of continued disruptions caused by recurring landslides in the region.
While commending the dedicated efforts of the workers and implementing agencies engaged in restoration, the Chief Minister expressed serious concern over the long-standing issue of landslides along this critical highway stretch. He remarked that the terrain in and around Phesama is not only hilly but highly vulnerable to landslides, making traditional repair methods unsustainable in the long run. “National Highways are the lifelines of our nation,” Rio emphasized, adding that the State Government is working closely with all concerned agencies to ensure swift restoration of the damaged section.Recognizing the recurring nature of landslides in the region over the past several decades, Mr. Rio called for a permanent solution. He strongly advocated for the construction of a bypass or alternate road built to National Highway specifications, capable of withstanding heavy vehicular traffic, including loaded trucks. The Chief Minister’s visit underlines the urgency of infrastructure resilience in Nagaland, especially as the state continues to face extreme weather and climate-related challenges.
